On Wednesday, March 1, the city of Rio de Janeiro celebrates its 458th anniversary. Renowned for its natural beauty, Rio also offers a variety of leisure activities. A survey1 has revealed that, after listening to music, the second most popular activity among Rio's inhabitants (known as "Cariocas") is visiting shopping centers.
Aiming to introduce more leisure, entertainment, and a varied mix of stores and restaurants to the marvelous city, Multiplan has been building and managing shopping centers in the region since 1981. Today, it has five projects located in the West Zone. The spaces are designed to promote interaction and fun among friends and family. After all, there is nothing more Carioca than having a beer in the food court, arranging to meet at the movies, or eating ice cream with your friends to cool off in the 40ºC heat.
BarraShopping was the first to be inaugurated in Rio de Janeiro, in 1995, and was a milestone in the development and growth of Barra da Tijuca. It is considered one of the largest shopping and leisure complexes in Latin America, and it has been voted "Cariocas' Favorite Shopping Mall" in O Globo newspaper's survey "Cariocas' Brands" for 13 consecutive years.
In 1999, the NewYorkCityCenter, which is integrated to BarraShopping, arrived featuring a distinctive architectural project, emphasizing entertainment. The development was designed to facilitate maximum air flow, thus avoiding the buildup of heat. The roof was also designed to prevent the entry of solar radiation while still allowing the environment to remain bright. These measures are estimated to save around 20% in energy costs compared to that of a conventional shopping center.
Focusing on fashion, culture, services, and high-end gastronomy, VillageMall brings renowned national and international brands in the luxury market to its consumers. Located in one of the most privileged areas of Barra da Tijuca, it also features a theatre capable of seating 1,060 people for grand shows, four VIP movie theatres, and a food court area with a terrace overlooking the Tijuca Lagoon.
ParkShoppingCampoGrande arrived delivering an improved quality of life to the region's inhabitants. It offers quick access and avenues for ease of movement, and boasts mega stores, movie theaters, an indoor park and more than 2,700 parking spaces.
The Company's most recent inauguration was ParkJacarepaguá, located in the Anil neighborhood. Since 2021, when operations began, the region surrounding the development has been positively transformed, with the revitalization of public roads, school remodeling, and improvements to family clinics, which received new equipment donated by Multiplan. For leisure, the mall, designed as a "shopping center of the future," was inspired by European models and introduced a novel playground to Brazil, the Magic Park. This innovative environment combines technology and entertainment in an enjoyable, inclusive space, full of sensory experiences.
In addition to its shopping centers, Multiplan, since the early 1990's, has been investing in residential construction in Rio de Janeiro. The first of these, also in the Barra da Tijuca region, was Barra Golden Green. The condominium consists of 14 buildings, a heliport, and a private club. In a second phase, the Península Green and Royal Green Península, which have almost 400 apartments, were designed to provide more comfort, entertainment, security and on-going contact with nature.
Today, we would like to extend our congratulations to the city of Rio de Janeiro, which has provided unparalleled and pioneering experiences to Multiplan. We are proud to be a part of this history, and, just like Christ the Redeemer, we will always keep our arms open to welcome our friends, investors, employees and customers. Congratulations, Marvelous City!
